Engage them?
Where should human judgment end and machine judgment begin?

The novel does not invent artificial intelligence.
It extends today’s trends a little further down the road.
The autonomous systems in the story grow naturally from technologies already under development. Distributed computing, machine learning, cyber operations, autonomous drones, cloud infrastructure, and advanced sensors all exist today. What interested me was not whether those technologies would continue to improve—they almost certainly will—but what might happen when they begin interacting in ways no one fully anticipated.
The result is fiction.
The questions are real.
As a journalist covering the military for more than three decades, I learned that tomorrow’s capabilities often begin quietly. They appear in research laboratories, engineering demonstrations, field exercises, or small operational experiments. Years later, they become routine.
Today’s headlines about artificial intelligence remind me of those earlier moments.
We are watching another technological transition unfold.
No one can say exactly where it will lead.
But it is changing the character of warfare before our eyes.
